JOB TITLE: Materials Manager

 

SCOPE:  The materials manager is primarily responsible for overseeing and leading a team of salaried supervisors and indirect labor associates in support of the manufacture and assembly of products, components and parts for custom fire and rescue vehicles.  The materials manager is accountable for meeting material delivery objectives, inventory analysis, cost reduction, receiving standards, cycle counting, ISO/quality audit management, and LEAN tool implementation.  Vital to this position is leadership, process discipline, materials management, inventory control, warehousing, and data analysis.  The manager must possess a high level of technical knowledge and experience in BOM and MRP management.  An expert understanding of LEAN and quantifiable levels of success implementing LEAN methodologies is required.  Training and personnel development will be a key component in the day to day responsibility of the materials manager.  The manager must also lead the team in safety, quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement initiatives.  The material manager will report to the Director of Materials and Planning.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Daily assignments of salaried materials supervisors in material handling and material control in order to meet schedule commitments and cycle time requirements.  Prioritizes and manages the workflow within the department to ensure timely and efficient task completion in accordance with the production schedule and materials specific assignments.

 

  • Accountability for ensuring all quality, regulatory and ISO requirements are met.  Responsible to make sure appropriate actions are taken to meet all requirements, including stopping production if appropriate.

 

  • Reviews all work within the department to assure accuracy of the work meets standard operating procedures and job expectations.

 

  • Responsible for safety and environmental compliance of the department.  Holds departmental employees accountable for following all OSHA and company policies and regulations.  Actively participates in safety improvement activities.

 

  • Responsible and accountable for maintaining accurate and timely attendance records of employees in the department

 

  • Responsible for departmental compliance and enforcement of all company policies and procedures.  Ensures consistent and effective employee relations.  Recommends rewards/recognition as appropriate.  Initiates necessary disciplinary actions as required.

 

  • Provides technical expertise for problem resolution.  Liaisons with appropriate departments such as Production, Engineering, Sales Administration, Product Management to determine root cause and corrective actions.

 

  • Provides input and recommendation on staffing requirements and selection of departmental personnel.  Will assist in developing area budget goals for personnel, equipment, supplies, etc..

 

  • Responsible for the training and development of all departmental personnel.  This includes defining the job function requirements, training plans for employees to develop the required skills, and maintaining the department qualification and training skill matrix.  Required to evaluate employees in terms of skill set and other department/company requirements.

 

  • Actively leads continuous improvement activities within the departments.  Leads the implementation of Lean foundational blocks of Identification of Waste, 5S, Standard Work, and Visual Management.  Participates in Kaizen Events and takes on roles of subject matter expert where appropriate.  Participates in value stram map creation and goal setting.

 

 

POSITION EXPECTATIONS:

  1. SAFETY: Follow E-ONE General Health & Safety Rules, ensure safe operating conditions within your area of responsibility and notify coworkers and supervisors of hazardous acts and conditions. Proper use of PPE; use only defect-free equipment.  Promote safety in department.  Use proper lifting techniques and overheard hoist when needed.  Maintain clean and safe working environment in line with 5-S Philosophy.   Participate in hazardous communication training and safety meetings.
  2. QUALITY:  Responsible for the quality of your work.  This requires that you perform defect-free work and understand the requirements of the company’s quality system as it pertains to your job duties and responsibilities.  Must be able to check your work to ensure conformance to process control instructions, specifications, and quality standards.  Identify and segregate non-conforming product.  Identify the need for and assist in initiating and implementing corrective and preventive actions when appropriate.
  3. FLEXIBILITY:  Able and willing to work in other areas as needed.  Must be flexible in taking lunch and breaks when workflow requires. Willing to work additional hours as necessary.
  4. INITIATIVE:   Actively participate in continuous improvement of our products and processes to better serve our customers and improve the overall profitability of E-ONE.  Actively seek out work in other areas when current assignment is complete.  Make suggestions for improving product quality, processes, safety, and company profitability.
  5. TEAMWORK:  Positive working attitude toward other employees; be a team player.  Work with others constructively and abide by company policies and procedures.  Working together as a team for continuous improvement is vital to ensure the future of E-ONE and its employees.  Teamwork will be required to be effective in both our daily production assignments as well as special improvement projects.
  6. CAREER DEVELOPMENT:  Attend and participate in a variety of meetings, training programs, and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specific level of knowledge pertaining to changes to equipment or process, new developments, requirements, procedures and policies and assist with the training and orientation of new or transferred employees as directed.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School Diploma with appropriate level of relative experience.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8 years work related experience, 4 years in Supervisory or Leadership capacity.  Manager experience a plus.
  • Practical experience including warehouse operations, MRP, inventory control, material handling and receiving
  • Experience in specialty vehicle production or custom manufacturing environment
  • Detailed knowledge and experience with material handling and inventory control processes
  • Expert  understanding and application of lean principles and continuous improvement methodologies is mandatory
  • APICS Certification (CPIM) is highly desirable
  • Knowledge and experience with regulatory agency requirements such as NFPA, FAA, DOT, etc.
  • Excellent communication, employee relations, team building, conflict management and MS Office skills
