The Senior IT System Engineer - Linux and Database is a hands-on role responsible for managing a Linux/Unix-based database environment. This role involves designing, configuring, and managing Red Hat Linux, Oracle Linux, and Solaris 9/10 servers, including Oracle Database administration on these platforms.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing and maintaining shell scripts to transfer EDI files to external vendors.
- Planning, monitoring, securing, and optimizing the performance of Linux/Unix servers and Oracle databases.
- Troubleshooting Linux/Unix and Oracle Database issues.
- Administering Linux/Unix system updates and Oracle patching.
- Designing, testing, and implementing systems and procedures to ensure business continuity in case of network server emergencies or disasters.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Support daily operations for Linux/Unix servers and Oracle Databases, aligning with departmental goals.
- Maintain and monitor Linux/Unix hardware inventory and software assets to ensure capacity planning, license compliance, and operational efficiency.
- Configure and install new Linux servers to support internal projects and user requests.
- Manage installation, configuration, administration, security, performance tuning, and troubleshooting for Linux/Unix servers and Oracle Databases.
- Diagnose and resolve Linux/Unix hardware, software, and connectivity issues, providing problem management and escalation support.
- Ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley requirements through effective change, configuration, and release management.
- Test Linux operating systems, software, and hardware for usability, functionality, and integration into the existing environment.
- Document application installation, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery procedures for Linux/Unix server environments.
- Safeguard assets by implementing disaster recovery and backup procedures, along with information security measures.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Hands-on experience with Linux/Unix operating systems, DNS, and Backup/Restore environments (Veeam preferred).
- Proficiency in Oracle Database administration and RMAN backup/recovery.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
- Project management experience.
Education and/or Experience:
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
- Required: Minimum 5 years of experience with Linux/Unix server administration.
- Required: Minimum 5 years of experience managing Oracle RDBMS.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to communicate effectively via phone, email, and in-person.
- Must be able to hear, understand, and speak with individuals at all levels within a diverse workforce.
- Ability to walk and climb to different work locations, including remote sites.
- Must be able to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
- Ability to lift and carry work materials up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment/Conditions:
- Primarily an office-based role with remote network access for system management.
- Requires occasional work in data centers, computer rooms, and network closets for hardware installation and management.
- May involve onsite work at manufacturing plants to manage IT systems supporting production operations.
