Position Summary:
The Sewing Department Supervisor is responsible for overseeing daily sewing operations to ensure high-quality, timely production of custom automotive interiors for luxury vans and specialty vehicles. This role manages a team of sewing operators, coordinates workflow, maintains quality standards, and supports continuous improvement in efficiency, safety, and team performance.
Key Responsibilities:
Production & Workflow Management
- Plan, organize, and oversee daily sewing operations to meet production schedules.
- Assign tasks to sewing team members based on production priorities and skill sets.
- Monitor work in progress to ensure timely completion and adherence to quality standards.
- Coordinate with other departments (Upholstery, Cutting, Assembly) to ensure smooth workflow.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, train, and mentor sewing staff to enhance skills and productivity.
- Provide regular feedback, coaching, and performance evaluations.
- Foster a positive, collaborative work environment that encourages teamwork and accountability.
Quality Assurance
- Ensure all sewn components meet company specifications and customer expectations.
- Implement and enforce quality control procedures, inspecting work regularly.
- Address defects or production issues promptly, identifying root causes and solutions.
Safety & Compliance
- Promote and enforce safety policies and proper equipment use.
- Ensure the sewing department complies with company and regulatory standards.
Continuous Improvement
- Recommend and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize material usage.
- Stay informed on industry trends, tools, and techniques to enhance department capabilities.
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in sewing or upholstery preferred.
- 3+ years of sewing or upholstery experience in a manufacturing environment.
- 2+ years of supervisory or team lead experience.
- Strong knowledge of industrial sewing machines, materials, and stitching techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret patterns, technical drawings, and specifications.
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred
- Experience in automotive, RV, or marine upholstery manufacturing.
- Lean manufacturing or continuous improvement experience.
Physical Requirements:
- Frequently required to bend, stoop, squat, and climb ladders/scaffolding.
- Ability to work with arms above the head.
- Regularly lift and move 25 lbs., occasionally up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to work in non-temperature-controlled environments.
- Must be able to operate and understand all required personal protective equipment (PPE).
