The Utility position is a hands-on, flexible role that supports production, materials, and facilities teams to keep operations running safely, smoothly, and on schedule. This role “floats” between departments based on daily needs—staging parts, replenishing materials, moving units, assisting with light assembly, maintaining 5S standards, and helping with cleanup and waste handling. Success in this job requires strong situational awareness, attention to detail, and dependable teamwork.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  •  Production line support: Assist skilled workers, such as electricians, plumbers, and mill room, with a wide range of tasks on the assembly line.
  • General assembly: Perform a combination of assembly tasks, which can include cutting, shaping, and joining wood and metal parts using hand and power tools.
  • Quality assurance: Assist with basic quality and testing checks to ensure products meet company standards.
  • Equipment operation: Feed raw materials into production machinery and monitor the process for any issues.
  • Provide line support: stage, deliver, and return parts, kits, and tools to/from work cells per schedule.
  • Maintain work areas to 5S standards: sweep, remove debris, organize racks/bins, empty scrap and recycle, and support end-of-shift cleanup.
  • Support cycle counts and basic inventory accuracy checks, report shortages, damages, and discrepancies promptly.
  • Replenish consumables to point-of-use stations; update logs or apps as required.
  • Handle waste streams (general, scrap metal, wood, cardboard, and approved chemicals) following safety and environmental guidelines.
  • Help move vehicles/units on the lot if trained/authorized; use spotters and follow yard safety rules.
  • Follow all safety policies (LOTO, PPE, forklift/pedestrian rules) and immediately report hazards, near-misses, and incidents.
  • Support continuous improvement (kaizen) and suggest ideas to improve flow, reduce waste, and enhance quality.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to meet production goals with a customer-first mindset.

Qualifications and Skills:

 

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • 6+ months in manufacturing, warehouse, construction, or similar hands-on role preferred.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and comfort using hand/power tools and RF scanners (training provided).
  • Ability to read work orders, tags, simple drawings, and safety labels in English.
  • Adaptability: The ability to learn and switch between different tasks quickly and effectively is a key requirement.
  • Attention to detail: Utility workers must be committed to following safety protocols and ensuring product quality.
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable driving record for on-lot moves preferred.
  • Reliable attendance, positive attitude, and ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities.
  • Team-oriented with clear communication and customer service mindset toward internal partners.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, reach, kneel; climb in/out of vehicles as needed.
  • Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 40 lbs regularly; team-lift above 40 lbs per policy.
  • Use hands and arms for handling parts/tools; sustained repetitive motions possible.
  • Tolerate exposure to typical shop conditions (noise, dust, temperature changes) with required PPE.
  • Visual acuity and depth perception sufficient for driving carts/forklifts and spotting pedestrians.

 

 

 

Work Environment & Schedule

  • On-site manufacturing environment (production floor, warehouse, outdoor lot).
  • Full-time; standard shift with overtime and occasional Saturdays based on production demand.
  • Rotating tasks throughout the shift; pace varies with schedule and takt time.
  • PPE required per area (e.g., safety glasses, hearing protection, and gloves).
