Heavy Welders are responsible for various types of weld preparation, welding and weld finishing operations to produce aerial ladder components to customer and industry specifications based on blueprints, drawings specifications, or other forms of instruction. Individuals in this position are required to pulse weld and work with a variety of hand tools and power tools. 



  • Review prints to determine welding procedure and any modifications to prints
  • Assemble, weld and prepare heavy weldments for outside machining.
  • Assemble and weld outriggers
  • Assemble and weld outriggers housing.
  • Assemble and weld rear outrigger superstructure
  • Build ladder and truck components to meet build specifications 
  • Proficient in assigned welding techniques
  • Use plasma cutter as needed to meet build specifications
  • Interpretation of mechanical drawings, including weld requirement symbology
  • Knowledge of wire and filler materials applications for various steel alloys,  and aluminum
  • Working knowledge of fixturing and weld set up parameters (amps, volts, etc.)
  • Effective use of conventional and precision measuring instruments
  • Perform process inspection to assure quality welds
  • Perform basic maintenance on welding equipment
  • Finish grinding applications using manual and power tools
  • Use basic hand and powers tools as required to build ladder to specifications
  • Assure all welds are completed and cleaned to meet QC standards
  • Assist with and perform duties defined in all levels of welding positions.
  • Other duties as assigned





  • Ability to use basic hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read and use a tape measure to precise measurements.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to maintain attendance within company guidelines.
  • Ability to retain and apply instructions. 
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Basic math skills; addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, ability to convert decimals to fractions.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and abilities.
  • Must be VERY detail orientated. 
  • Ability to read and understand trucks specifications document
  • Ability to use and maintain equipment
  • Ability to read, communicate and understand in English
  • Ability to assess and apply the best process to complete the project.
  • May assist with the training of associates.
  • Self sufficient, self motivated
  • Ability to work under pressure and tight time tables.
  • Must be able to obtain welding certification within 3 months of hire.
  • Welding skills must meet the NFPA, D1-1 welding code, and pass UL inspections.
  • Ability to perform in position MIG welding on Carbon Steel materials
  • Ability to read protractor to determine angles.
  • Ability to work on own with minimal instruction
  • Vocation training or equivalent experience and 2+ years’ experience.
  • Ability to perform in-position MIG welding on Carbon Steel
  • Ability to set up and maintain welders properly to meet welding standards
  • Ability to perform basic layout skills.
  • Ability to read and utilize blueprints
  • Experience in Pulse MIG welding
