The Engineering Manager will be responsible for leading and developing the engineering team consisting of engineers and technicians Develop world-class, robust engineering solutions to the Emergency Vehicles industry.  A technical expert that demonstrates strong leadership and inspires excellence by keeping teams focused and holding team members responsible for delivering world-class products on time.  The Engineering Manager creates and sustains structured engineering design processes that promote effectiveness, throughput, and efficiency as well as champion, develop, and implement continuous process improvements.  Acts as liaison with Sales, Operations, Procurement, Manufacturing, Quality, Finance, and Customer Service.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Leads teams of 5-15 people to develop product specifications, design, validate and release products, and support those products through production and in the field.
  • Establishes high quality standards for department and promotes sense of urgency and accountability.
  • Directs his/her team to meet internal customer requirements by delivering accurate design packages and Bills of Materials on time to Supply Chain and Manufacturing.
  • Manage vacation and timecard approvals, hiring, and training. 
  • Motivate, coach, reward, and discipline team being supervised; resolve personnel issues.  
  • Establishes and implements structured engineering design processes and metrics that effectively measure and improve team performance.
  • Pursues innovative ways to improve development productivity through the introduction of new technologies, tools, systems, methods, and controls.
  • Establishes processes and validation rules to ensure compliance with regulatory standards, adopted engineering standards, and good engineering practices. 
  • Assists with cost saving projects through VA/VE initiatives.
  • Ensures that proper documentation, such as test specifications, design changes and procedures, is provided to the appropriate functional areas.
  • Provides manufacturing and customer support.
  • Allocates resources within work level demands and budgetary constraints. 
  • Leads teams in the development of new products, solutions, and processes.
  • Strives to improve efficiency and sustainability of processes and product designs, and to reduce waste.
  • Attends trade shows and conferences and makes site visits to suppliers’ facilities.
  • Advocates on behalf of team members by securing adequate resources for success.
  • Communicates technical information to non-technical stakeholders, including investors and potential customers.
  • Maintains high level expertise in their field or sector.
  • Assures that processes meet quality and safety compliance guidelines.
  • Collaborates with other team leaders and departments.
  • Forges and maintains relationships with suppliers and customers.

Other Duties May Include, But Are Not Limited To:

  • Developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and providing guidance to others to ensure compliance to applicable regulatory standards – NFPA, DOT, FMVSS, CMVSS, NEC, KKK-A-1822, CAAS, etc.
  • Ability to mentor team members on design principles, regulatory standards, etc.

  • Proficiency using presentation software to explain complex information to non-technical management personnel and other stakeholders.
  • Experience using computer-aided design (CAD) platforms.

 

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • BS in engineering required.
  • 7 to 10 years practical experience in truck or automotive product development and manufacturing or other related highly complex manufacturing industry.
  • 5 years engineering management.
  • Experience designing products for reliability, serviceability, and manufacturability.
  • Knowledgeable in structures, kinematics, or FEA.
  • Master’s degree in engineering or MBA a plus.
