Job summary:

Carries out responsible and varied engineering assignments requiring general familiarity with a broad field of engineering and knowledge of reciprocal effects of the work upon other fields. Problems usually solved by use of combination of standard procedures, modification of standard procedures, or method developed in previous assignments. Participate in planning to achieve prescribed objectives. Advisor to several departments regarding technical and design issues.


Essential Functions:

  • Review of customer orders to determine parameters for subsequent creation of engineering documentation.
  • Design and sketching of major parts, Harnesses and assemblies. Utilization of CAD to ensure proper form, fit, and function of design.
  • Investigation of minor projects or project parameters as they relate to locations, fit, and feasibility.
  • Prepare cal      culations for design adequacy in areas of component design.
  • May be required to test-drive product for testing and analysis.
  • May be involved in testing designs and configurations for compliance with standards (NFPA, FAA, ICAO standards and ISO)
  • May be responsible for training and guidance of designers or engineers.
  • Determine root cause and resolution of problems on the production floor.
  • Prepare and/or check bills of material, line sheets, create new part numbers, and manage engineering change orders.
  • May assist in maximizing efficiency techniques of current designs and research ways to improve existing systems.
  • Must be able to prioritize duties and complete tasks according to established schedules so as not to compromise completion dates.
  • May analyze parts for strength / durability.
  • May give technical guidance or training to others assigned to work on a common project.
  • May be involved in new product research and development as well as continuous cost reduction efforts.
  • May be required to provide support to sales, marketing, service, warranty, production and recycle departments.
  • Build, calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot and/or repair electrical instruments or testing equipment.
  • Analyze and interpret test information to resolve design-related problems.
  • Must be fluent in working with Controller Area Network (CAN BUS). Knowledge of J1939 Protocol.


Other duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Perform or assist with any operations, as required or directed, to maintain work flow or respond to production requirements.
  • May be asked to perform within physical requirements including, but not limited to 45 lb. single lift; kneeling, squatting, and standing for long periods of time. Ability to wear fall protection devices as needed when working at heights above 4 feet.

Requirements (education, experience, travel, physical, work environment):

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Must have 2+ years or more of practical experience.
  • Must have detailed knowledge of manufacturing processes.
  • Must have exposure to mechanical, hydraulic and/or electrical routines as related to the manufacture and design of emergency vehicles or mobile equipment
  • Thorough understanding of design and drafting techniques, manufacturing processes, lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, DFMA processes and Brainstorming techniques.
  •  Knowledge of MRP systems preferred.
  • Must be proficient in AutoCAD 2007 or higher.
  • Knowledge of ProE.
  • Knowledge of Zucken software. 
  • Microsoft Office 2007 programs such as Outlook, Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Will need a thorough understanding of FMVH, SAE, NEC, NESC, NFPA, FAA, FMVSS, ICAO standards and ISO guidelines.
  • Must have experience working with common hand tools.
  • Knowledge of circuit boards, processor, chips, and electronic test equipment (Oscilloscope, etc.).  
  • Experienced with multiplexing technology and programming.
