Job Summary:

The Engineering Manager leads a team of engineers, designers, and technicians to meet engineering, production, and business objectives. This role provides technical and people leadership, manages resources and priorities, and ensures designs and engineering documentation meet customer, regulatory, quality, cost, and manufacturing requirements. The Engineering Manager also drives continuous improvement, develops team capabilities, and partners cross-functionally to resolve technical issues and support overall business performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates activities of engineers, designers, and technicians by scheduling work assignments, setting priorities, and directing the work of the assigned team to meet goals and objectives as defined for the department.
  • Creates design and engineering packages and oversees and approves design engineering work by his/her team – meeting all customer, industry, and business requirements and needs. May have leadership responsibility for other engineering activities such as manufacturing or industrial engineering projects.
  • Responsible for the review and approval of designs, bills of material, and engineering documentation that his/her team produces such that it is in compliance with customer requirements, industry and regulatory standards, and established company practices prior to release to manufacturing.
  • Leads company initiatives, such as Lean, through his/her organization and departmental area of responsibility. Provides support to other departments and company initiatives such as lean, continuous improvement, and VAVE.
  • Plans and assigns resources as appropriate to deliver to engineering schedule commitments. Provides technical input as to more complex activities requiring changes to established schedules.
  • Leads root cause analysis and corrective action on technical problems. Uses originality and ingenuity in devising practical and economical solutions to problems.
  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through review of completed work assignments and work techniques. Identifies staff development and training needs and conducts the training or otherwise ensures that training is obtained.
  • Identifies and implements best practices in terms of technical and practical design and shares such practices among other team leaders and departments.
  • Confers with management and production to determine engineering feasibility for production, and cost effectiveness for new and existing products.
  • Manages his/her team to control operating costs of the department within established budgets. Participates in short-term planning activities.
  • Maintains industry standards while driving ingenuity in product design with a focus on profitability and cost reduction.
  • Responsible for administrative functions such as recording time and attendance and enforcement of policies and procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with company/team objectives regarding processes, initiatives, and projects.

  • Follow the company Health and Safety Rules, ensure safe operating conditions within area of responsibility, and notify coworkers and supervisors of hazardous acts and conditions. Proper use of PPE; use only defect-free equipment. Promote safety in department. Use proper lifting techniques and overhead hoist when needed. Maintain clean and safe working environment in line with 5-S Philosophy. Participate in hazardous communication training and safety meetings.

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or Master of Science in Engineering Management (preferred)
  • Ability to create clear objectives and deploy team to meet or exceed those objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess talent, grow & develop teams, and collaborate cross-functionally
  • Must have a thorough understanding of design and drafting techniques
  • Must be knowledgeable of AutoCAD, ProE/Creo or other design software
  • Must have ability to respond to and lead production support initiatives
  • A thorough understanding of the manufacturing process and MRP/PRP systems
  • A thorough understanding of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement processes
  • Ability to evaluate and deploy resources to meet established schedules
  • At least (7) years of practical technical experience, including 4 years of Supervisory experience, or 4 years of Lead Engineer experience.

Work Environment/Conditions:

  • General office environment with work on the plant floor as required.
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 40#’s without assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
