Basic Purpose: The Drafter is responsible for supporting Engineers and Designers by producing engineering documents that are used by production to manufacture custom fire apparatus.  Piece part, and assembly drawings are created from a 3D model of the apparatus.  Assistance with other misc. support functions will be required.  A strong understanding of proper mechanical drafting techniques/practices and familiarity with engineering terminology required.  A high mechanical aptitude, with the ability to complete basic mathematical calculations is required.        

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential Functions

  1. Under supervision of an Engineer or Designer, create drawings and bills of materials for components and body assemblies.  This includes detailing drawings as required by development of a new product or revising an existing product.
  2. Support Engineering Department progress to complete drawing revisions in a timely manner for release to Production. 
  3. Makes simple decisions but refers most questions/problems to Engineers and Designers.
  4. Makes copies of drawings and documents design changes.
  5. Ability to do simple layout drawings within level of product knowledge.
  6. Under direction of Engineers and Designers, organize and maintain records of materials, drawings, spreadsheets, test results, job histories, etc. of projects for future reference.
  7. Utilize a variety of software programs such as spreadsheets, databases, CAD programs, Windows, etc.
  8. Produce purchase part requisitions as specified in the shop order.
  9. Ability to read and decipher customer specifications for BOM quantities, materials and finishes.

 

Non-Essential Functions

  1. Perform other duties as may be assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Associates Degree or equivalent two-year college or technical school. 
  2. 2+ years of mechanical drafting experience.
  3. CAD experience using 3D solid modeling CAD software as well as 2D drawings experience;  experience with SolidWorks and AutoCad software required
  4. Skilled in PC usage and associated software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and Powerpoint)
  5. Demonstrated proficiency in both oral and written communication
  6. Proven ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  7. Demonstrated knowledge of metal fabrication, welding, and assembly practices
  8. Detail oriented with strong problem solving skills
  9. Self-motivated, needing little supervision
  10. While performing the duties of this job, the individual is regularly required to sit for extended periods while operating various computer equipment. The individual will frequently be required to walk, climb ladders, climb on top of and beneath incomplete and complete fire apparatus. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision.
