Smeal Fire Apparatus in Snyder, Nebraska is a fast-paced manufacturing environment where our employees work daily to provide the best Pumper and Aerial trucks for fire departments across the United States.  We are looking for an experienced Purchasing Manager to join our team and help enable our growth as we meet the demands of the industry.

 

Job Summary:

The Production Manager is responsible leading a team of salaried and direct labor associates in the manufacture and assembly of products, components and parts for custom fire vehicles, and strategically directing the operations to deliver the highest quality product while maximizing company profit.  The Manager position is responsible for leading multiple production departments/lines.  The Manager is accountable for setting a strategic direction in line with company missions and visions.  This position requires expert knowledge and application of lean manufacturing principles to drive continuous improvement in meeting company goals and objectives.   This position has great emphasis on highly skilled processes, complex assemblies and testing and the Manager must possess a high level of technical skill to assist the Operations team in troubleshooting and problem resolution..

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for safety and environmental compliance within areas of authority.  Holds departmental employees accountable for following all OSHA and company policies and regulations.  Actively leads safety improvement initiatives.
  • Responsible for development, compliance and enforcement of all company policies and procedures.  Ensures consistent and effective employee relations.  Recommends rewards/recognition as appropriate.  Initiates necessary disciplinary actions as required.
  • Communicates and interfaces with other senior leaders driving effective liaisons with other departments such as EHS, Purchasing/Materials, Engineering, Sales Administration, Quality.   Provides technical expertise for problem resolution and drives root cause and corrective actions.
  • Responsible for meeting established department budgets.  Leads activities for staffing requirements and selection of departmental personnel.  Recommends area budget goals for personnel, equipment, supplies and other cost elements to assure ongoing company profitability.
  • Evaluates and verifies employee performance through review of completed work assignments, work techniques and leadership skills.  Builds and mentors individuals and teams and identifies staff development/training needs. Conducts the training or otherwise ensures that training is obtained.

 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Expectations:

  • Follow General Health & Safety Rules, ensure safe operating conditions within area of responsibility and notify coworkers and supervisors of hazardous acts and conditions. Proper use of PPE; use only defect-free equipment.  Promote safety in department.  Use/Ensure proper lifting techniques and overheard hoist when needed.  Maintain clean and safe working environment in line with 5-S Philosophy.   Participate in hazardous communication training and safety meetings
  • Responsible for quality of work.  This requires that you perform defect-free work and understand the requirements of the company’s quality system as it pertains to your job duties and responsibilities.  Must be able to check your work to ensure conformance to process control instructions, specifications, and quality standards.  Identify and segregate non-conforming product.  Identify the need for and assist in initiating and implementing corrective and preventive actions when appropriate
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement of our products and processes to better serve our customers and improve the overall profitability.  Actively seek out work in other areas when current assignment is complete.  Make suggestions for improving product quality, processes, safety, and company profitability.
  • Able and willing to work in other areas as needed.  Must be flexible in taking lunch and breaks when workflow requires. Willing to work additional hours as necessary.
  • Positive working attitude toward other employees; be a team player.  Work with others constructively and abide by company policies and procedures.  Working together as a team for continuous improvement is vital to ensure the future of the company and its employees.  Teamwork will be required to be effective in both our daily production assignments as well as special improvement projects.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as Made2Manage/Great Plains/Dynamics 365 preferred.
  • Experience managing multiple projects in parallel, driving acceptable results on time.
  • Attend and participate in a variety of meetings, training programs, and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems and maintain specific level of knowledge pertaining to changes to equipment or process, new developments, requirements, procedures and policies and assist with the training and orientation of new or transferred employees as directed..
  • Excellent computer literacy, including the ability to effectively use Microsoft Office Business Suites.
  • Demonstrate an ability to lead people and get results through others.
  • Demonstrate an ability to lead effective change and process transformations.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Some ability to read and understand engineering drawings, blueprints, assembly drawings, schematics, and other written or verbal instructions.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and group situations to other employees of the organization.

 

Education and/or Experience:

  • Associate or Bachelor’s Degree; or equivalent years of experience required.
  • Minimum 10 years work related experience, 7 years in Supervisory or Leadership capacity
  • Practical experience can include electrical, mechanical, welding, metal fabrication, etc..
  • Experience in vehicle production or custom manufacturing environment preferred
  • Experience in low-volume, high-variability engineer-to-order environment a plus.
  • Excellent business acumen.  Previous experience with P&L or Cost Center responsibility
  • Detailed knowledge and experience with manufacturing processes
  • Thorough understanding and application of lean principles and continuous improvement methodologies.
