Primary Functions:
Make adjustments necessary to maintain quality and production standards and operate machines in a safe manner. Perform shop math to layout, setup and machine required manufacturing parts and components. Meet production standards within the allotted time with minimal supervision.
A – (additional functions)
- Read blueprints.
- Perform some setups for assigned work cells.
Master – (additional functions)
- Individuals assigned to this classification will be those that through experience, self motivation and ability have attained a high level of expertise and experience within a specified area of production.
- Must be able to set up all in-house fab shop machines, with the exception of writing programs for CNC equipment.
- Assist lead and supervisor in production scheduling.
- Must be instrumental in training fab machine operators in all pay grades.
- Fill in any position in the fab department as necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions in English.
- Close attention to detail.
- Function with a minimal amount of supervision.
- Set work priorities to meet production goals as scheduled per assigned department.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those in contact on a day-to-day basis.
- Meet minimum standards of safety per assigned department.
- Meet minimum standards of housekeeping per assigned department.
- Be compliant with all the rules of conduct and attendance per the company handbook.
- Read job specifications to determine machine adjustments and material requirements.
- Set stops and guides to specified length as indicated by scale, rule, or template.
- Position work piece against stops or align layout marks with dye or blade.
- Observe machine operation to detect work piece defects or machine malfunction.
- Measure work piece dimensions to determine accuracy of machine operation.
- Remove burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from work piece.
- Produce parts according to quality standards.
- Use and setup safety equipment in assigned work center.
- Able to reproduce all operations within acceptable quality and time standards.
- Other duties and responsibilities as required.
- Ensure that hazardous waste that is handled is placed into the proper container(s).
- Maintains all satellite and storage containers in a closed position unless adding or removing waste.
- Familiar with Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan.
- Knows spill response procedures and evacuation routes.

- Able to use specific hand and power tools.
- Must be proficient in all areas of department.
Master – (additional duties and responsibilities)
- Carry out in-process inspections at critical points in the production cycle.
- Assist in scheduling work for each work center.
- Assist in designing templates, special set-up devices, etc.
Qualifications/Training:
- Ability to read, write, comprehend, and verbally communicate simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos in English.
- Ability to read blueprints helpful.
- Ability to read English and Metric tape measures and use measuring devices.
- Ability to perform all operations within acceptable quality and time standards.
- Ability to recognize quality expected and be able to reproduce it.
- Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.
- Must be able to set up and operate basic shop machines with minimum supervision.
- Able to setup and operate press break with moderate supervision.
- Must maintain a positive rating as described in the training/qualification evaluation record as a Master, “A”, or “B” Fab Machine Operator.
- Must have general knowledge of OSHA and EPA standards.
- Be trained in Hazardous Materials Handling Operations with an annual refresher course.
- Hazardous waste training shall be provided to employees within six months of the date the employee filled this position, and a review of this training will be provided every 12 months thereafter. Employees shall be supervised until training is complete. This training will consist of at least 30 minutes of classroom instruction and additional on-the-job training as needed.
- Training will include familiarization with roles as outlined in the Hazardous Waste Contingency Plan.
Master – (additional qualifications/training)
- Able to set up and operate basic shop machines and press break with little or no supervision.
- Must be able to meet quality run standards.
- Must be able to determine proper die clearances for unitized tooling and punch press area.
- Must be able to maintain templates and tooling.
- Must be able to determine proper settings for safety equipment throughout the shop.
- Ability to play a key role in training fab machine operators at all levels.
- Able to drive a forklift.
- Able to operate an overhead crane.
- Able to upgrade templates as required.

The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee is occasionally required to stand, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Other physical requirements include:
- Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 40 lbs. without assistance.
- Ability to work from various squatting, kneeling, or bending positions.
- Ability to work with arms above head.
- Ability to work from ladders or scaffolding.
- Ability to stand at a workstation for eight hours a day (minus specified breaks).
- Ability to safely use specified hand, air, power tools, and machinery.
- Ability to operate and understand the operation of all protective safety equipment in the area.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Hand-eye coordination.
- Ability to work in above 100-degree heat for excess of ten (10) hours per day.
- Ability to work in noisy and dusty conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Experience:
B -
- One (1) year previous machine shop experience in a manufacturing environment required.
A -
- Two (2) years previous machine shop experience in a manufacturing environment required.
- Three (3) months minimum experience as a Fab Machine Operator “B” or prior acceptable training.
Master –
- Three (3) months of experience as a Fab Machine Operator “A” or prior acceptable experience.
Personal Protective Equipment Recommended and/or Required:
- Safety glasses.
- Face shields.
- Earplugs.
- Work gloves.
